Detergent is a water-soluble cleansing agent that makes impuritbabyd dirt in clothing more soluble in water.
All detergents are made principally of caustic soda and other ingredients such as distilled water, hydrogen peroxide, sulphonic acid or concentrated hydrochloric acid, fragrance oil, palm kernel oil, thick ash, and dye. However, fragrance and dye-free detergents are best for baby laundry and those with allergies or sensitive skin.

To make about 10 kg of powder detergent you will need the following ingredients:
1.8kg distilled water
750mls(0.75kg) hydrogen peroxide
375 mls (0.37kg) sulphonic acid or HCL
100 mls (0.10kg) Tea tree oil
2250 MLS (2.25kg)Palm kernel
oil
1kg caustic soda
3kg light soda ash
0.1kg dried bleach sediments
Color ( optional)
Note: Always use a container that is double the size of the volume you want to make to avoid spillage.
1. Part 1 of 4
Preparation of caustic soda salt solution
1. Put on all protective gear.
2. Pour 3 beer bottles of distilled water into a heat-resistant paint bucket ( a beer bottle is 60 cl )
3. Add caustic soda to the water and stir. You will notice that the solution becomes hot and irritating. Be careful!
4. Set aside for 3 days out of reach of children.
2. Part 2 of 4
Mixing of PKO, mild antiseptic, and catalyst
1. In another clean dry paint bucket pour palm kernel oil
2. Add sulphonic acid into the oil and stir ( Some people use concentrated hydrochloric acid in place of sulphonic acid.)
3. Add hydrogen peroxide and stir
3. Part 3 of 4
Adding cooled caustic soda solution to the rest of the ingredients
1. Add soaked overnight caustic soda and mix.
2. Add soda ash light as quickly as possible and continue stirring.
3. Add lemon fragrance oil followed by colorant ( optional )
4. Part 4 of 4
Preparing the final product for packaging
1. Spread out under the sun to dry.
2. As soon as it dries, blend using a manual blender.
3. Add the dry bleach sediments and stir
3. Pack the finished product into suitable labeled packaging.
It is best to store them in a high, locked cabinet. Powdered laundry detergents do not expire or lose effectiveness unless they have been exposed to moisture. Powder detergent stored in a cool dry place will keep well for 6 months to one year after opening
General Tips
All fragrance oils and essential oils have color of their own, so add them before you add the colorant. Liquid food colors work perfectly.
* If you are allergic to odours use a nose mask
* Use protective hand gloves on both hands
*When you want to prepare a large volume like say 50 liters, use 50.5 liters instead to avoid overspill.
*Measure the recipes accurately to avoid production errors.
* Dissolve the ingredients well to avoid lumps in the final product
* Chemical salts look similar, so label all salt recipes to avoid misplacement during production
* Know the difference between water-based color and oil-based color

FAQ
Q. Can I substitute sulphonic acid with conc. HCL? And what about sulfuric acid?
A. Even though some people do substitute sulphonic acid with conc. Hydrochloric acid, the answer to your question is "no". Conc. Hydrochloric acid will produce a salt instead of a surfactant, resulting in an inferior detergent powder.
You cannot use Sulfuric acid as a substitute too because first, it is not typically used as a primary surfactant in detergents, second, it will alter the detergent's properties & effectiveness.
Sulphonic acids are still one of the best ingredients of choice for detergent making, which provides the necessary cleaning & foaming properties needed in a good quality detergent powder.
Q. Is the mixture left overnight to thicken before drying?
A. It wasn't left overnight to thicken before drying. It was spread out under the sun while still wet to dry.
Q. How did you do your drying?
A. It was spread in meal trays and sun-dried.
Q. What can one use in place of a blender?
A. You may use a hand sieve.
Q. What do I do if I want my detergent to be pure white?
A. You can use titanium dioxide.
Q. Can I skip dried bleach sediments?
A. Yes you can.
Q. When caustic soda is added, the entire liquid reacts and converts to foam. What went wrong?
A. Nothing was wrong. It is a common reaction you witness when making laundry detergent. That foam is your wet detergent powder. Sun dry it into powdered form.
Q. Must I use tea tree oil?
A. I prefer tea tree oil because of its antimicrobial & antifungal properties. However, if it is not available in your location, you may try using other essential oils.
Q. If I can't get to sun dry the mixture, can I leave it to dry by itself? Or can you recommend some equipment I can use, please?
A. No, you can't air dry your wet detergent by itself without the sun. It is not a suitable method because the process can take a longer period with an accumulation of dust, bacteria, etc. resulting in degradation of product quality.
I would recommend a hot air oven which is simple & effective if you can afford to buy it.
